Pawleys Island Hammocks was started in 1889 by a riverboat captain, Joshua John Ward, when he made his own rope hammock for a bed. The rest is history...but the tradition has continued in the fine craftsmanship of hammocks. Pawleys Island today makes rope hammock out of cotton and also polyester rope hammocks, quilted hammocks, as well as swings, and hammock stands.
