The Use of a Hammock As Your Bed

Eliminate tossing and turning from uncomfortable pressure points by sleeping in a hammock instead of on a mattress. It may sound crazy at first, but if you think about it, indigenous South Americans have been sleeping this way for centuries. No matter how soft your mattress is, you will still have to roll over to ease pressure points where your body weight collects on the mattress. In a hammock, the fabric is completely molded to your body, eliminating all of those nasty pressure points as well as the need to roll over.

The best type of hammock for sleeping in does not have a wood spreader bar. A spread bar spreads the hammock flat, making it more like a mattress. While pressure points are eliminated some, you won't feel quite as weightless as you would without the spreader bar.

There's a reason the Royal Navy used hammocks on their ships. The take up a small amount of space, and can be taken down at a moment's notice. Think of the possibilities for your small dwelling. Apartment living isn't always big on space, and imagine what you could achieve by putting a hammock in your college dorm. Hammocks are a big space saver when you have small living quarters.

If you're big into the outdoors and love to camp and hike, consider trading in your old tent and foam padding for a hammock with a rain fly and protective mosquito netting. No more looking for the flattest spot to pitch a tent - simply string up your sleeping quarters between two trees. Forget about the tent poles and stakes and carry a light-weight hammock in your back pack instead.

Have out of town guests frequently? If you have limited sleeping area for out-of-towners, but still want to be hospitable, suggest they sleep in hammocks when they come to visit. Quick and easy storage means that guests can sleep in the living room at night and clear out by day. It's a win-win situation for everyone. Just be careful that they don't enjoy the comfort of sleeping in a hammock so much that they won't want to leave.

Hammocks are truly versatile and comfortable sleeping apparatus. If you have relegated hammock use to your backyard after mowing the grass, reconsider. A hammock can be a great night's sleep whether you're traveling abroad, spending the night in the wilderness, or sleeping in your own room.
